Students organized cereals by who they thought the target audience was, adults, or kids - they suggested creating a venn diagram rather than a T-chart so we'd have a place to put cereals that could be for either group.

In December, I had the opportunity to teach a mini-unit on media literacy. With 6 years of media studies under my belt, this was something I was incredibly excited to teach. Students studied the purposes of media (using the acronym PIE, persuade, inform, and entertain), as well as marketing strategies used to persuade us. We looked at cereal boxes, and discussed who the target audience might be (adults, kids, or both). Students asked engaging questions, made insightful observations, and applied their knowledge to their own cereal box designs. Students also learned about the power of the opinions of our friends and family in making purchasing decisions. Check out some of the student's fantastic creations below!
